Compared to last year, it feels like i barely read anything interesting this year. With the exception of work material and magazines borrowed from the library (my new favorite hobby), i actually rarely read at all. I did read Bright Shiny Morning by Million Little Pieces author James Frey, but it was absolutely terrible. The only reason i actually finished it was because i couldn't just find out what happened by reading the last few pages. Turns out, there was actually no real ending, character development, or climax. Usually the essential items required to make a book, or any story really, worth reading.
A Thousand Splendid Suns however, was another story. As was the Kite Runner. Both of these books truly opened my eyes to what it would have been to be a women in certain times, certain areas of the middle east. A Thousand Splendid suns, especially made me stop and reflect on how lucky we are, as Canadian, to have the freedoms that we do. It made me realize that i probably spend way too much time thinking about my downfalls and shortcomings in the workplace, my personal life, and in my creative ventures. And it made me more grateful that we are even allowed to work, or express ourselves at all. Essentially, we are blessed to be given the opportunities that we have.
